Katherine Howard

Born: c. 1524. Died: 13 February 1542. Queen: 28 July 1540–22 November 1541

The annulment of the marriage to Anne put an end to the king’s discreet moonlit visits by barge to pursue his new love. Now Henry was free to openly marry Katherine Howard.

Katherine was part of the powerful Howard family and her birth is estimated at around 1524. Her father was Lord Edmund Howard, third son of the second Duke of Norfolk, and uncle to Anne and George Boleyn. Even with this connection she did not enjoy an overly privileged childhood. Her mother was Jocasta Culpeper Legh, and despite bringing considerable wealth to the marriage, Edmund would later complain to Wolsey of crippling debt. After the death of Jocasta, Edmund’s niece, Anne Boleyn, found him employment in Calais. Katherine was then sent to live in the household of her step-grandmother, Agnes Tilney, the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. The household would move between residences in Horsham in Surrey and Norfolk House, Lambeth on the south bank of the Thames opposite King Henry VIII’s palace in Whitehall.
